The
New River Trail at Hiwassee Trestle (951 ft.) crossing Claytor
Lake
Virginia's
premiere "Rails to Trails" project is an impressive feat
nearly as impressive as the route itself. The 57 mile trail follows
the former path of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. It passes through
the rolling green hills of the Virginia high country and follows
the New River for 39 miles. Stretching from Pulaski, Va to Galax,
Va, the gentle grade makes this a very easy hike. By using a map
and good planning, you can plan a hike that includes camping as
well as stays in Bed and Breakfast's. There are secluded sections
and a sporadic supply of filterable drinking water, so planning
is an integral part of a hike here.
