Camping
One
of my favorite campgrounds in the smokies is the Big Creek Campground.
With 13 sites situated right next to the creek itself,
there is not a more comfortable campground within the park. Nestled
in the midst of tall hardwoods there is plenty of shade here. The
sound of the rushing waters of Big Creek fills the air and many
small trails loop around the campground. A comfort station, minus
showers, can be found here also. Due to it's great popularity securing
a site here can be difficult. Check out time is 12 noon
so waiting around the self registration for departing campers
is usually the only sure method for getting a campsite. The campground
is seasonal so call ahead to make sure it is open.
Back-Country
Camping
Camping
at Walnut Bottoms, campsite 37, requires a reservation. You
must call for reservations in advance at the Backcountry
Country Reservations office. The number is:
(865)
436-1231 8 AM to 6 PM seven days a week.
The
hike to Walnut Bottoms is 5.2 miles. this a a wide, open and flat
area that has a very imposing bear presence. As always the
bears are not a threat as long as you handle your food correctly.
Don't cook near your tent, keep food in your tent and be sure to
hang your food from the devices that the park service has provided.
