Hemphill
Bald
This
hike begins at Polls Gap and follows an old logging road. It is
a gradual climb and a 9.5 mile round trip to Hemphill Bald. At the
beginning of this trail there are fantastic views of the Caldwell
Fork Valley and surrounding mountains. Many hikers hike just
a mile or two up this trail to witness these views. If you decide
to continue on to Hemphill Bald you will travel through a dense
forest and beds of wildflowers.
This
trail follows the border of the park and passes by a long split
rail fence that was installed by the Civilian Conservation Corp.
This fence is in surprisingly good shape considering that it was
installed in the 1930's. After hiking four and a quarter miles the
trail passes by the very large and open Hemphill Bald.
A great picnic spot, if you don't mind the presence of cows and
their accoutrements, it offers views of Maggie Valley and the neighboring
mountains. To get there turn left after exiting Mile High Campground.
After
entering the park, travel to Polls Gap the first trailhead
parking on the right. Facing the three trails here take the trail
to your immediate right.
