Snowbird
Loop
Another
option for novice to intermediate backpackers is a loop using the
Sassafras Creek and Burntrock Ridge Trails.
As
difficult as the upper reaches of the Big Snowbird Trail
can be, many hikers opt for an easier loop. This can be done by
turning left after crossing the Sassafras Creek. Just past the crossing,
Sassafras Creek Trail peels off to the left. This trail follows
Sassafras Creek, a beautiful mountain stream. After
3/4 of a mile the trail passes Sassafras Falls. This is great spot
to cool off and to break out the camera.
After
the falls the Burntrock Ridge Trail turns to the right. Take this
trail for 1.7 miles to the campsites of Middle Falls.
Return
via the Big Snowbird Trail to the parking area at Forest
Road 75.
